Orkney Image Library Hoy photos section – photos past and present of the whole island, often with extensive discussions, sometimes about family history. Here’s a good example.
The Statistical Accounts of Scotland reports for the parish of Walls and Flotta. Don’t be put off by the title. Parish ministers usually wrote the account for each parish, covering all manner of topics from natural history to the number of inns.. The Old Statistical Account (OSA) dates from the 1790s and the New Statistical Account (NSA) from the 1830s/1840s.

- Johnstons in Walls, Orkney – deals with North and South Walls families
- Whitton and Ritch Genealogy – the focus is Graemsay, Orkney, but there are Walls folk listed.
- Walls and Flotta deaths (1823-1844) – transcription available on the Flotta Web Guide (other interesting things too on this site about a neighbouring island though it doesn’t seem to have been updated recently)
- Walls war memorial information (Kirkwall Royal British Legion site)
Places to visit
- Longhope Lifeboat Museum – the island has a proud lifeboat history. My great grandfather was member of the first crew.
- Scapa Flow Visitor Centre – in the former naval base of Lyness, North Walls. Nearby is the Royal Naval Cemetery (Commonwealth War Graves Commission website). http://lyness-cemetery.blogspot.co.uk/ has photos of each gravestone.
